ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – After a scoreless first half, the Missouri S&T Lady Miners rode two second half goals to a 2-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Lewis on Sunday afternoon.
The Flyers possessed the ball for most of the first half but couldn’t connect on passes in the box. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan George (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) made a diving save on a shot by Leah Williams at 27:21 to keep the game scoreless. The Lady Miners pushed the tempo to start the second half and were rewarded with three quick corner kicks. On the third one Paige Smothers found Sabrina Drennan for the first goal of the game.
At 56:20 the Miners scored again. Valerie Crews broke open down the middle and raced toward the net. George made a one-handed save on the shot attempt, but Crews tracked down the rebound and scored on her second attempt.
The Flyers’ best chance down the stretch came at 83:47. Freshman Jordyn McMahon (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) attempted to cross the ball from the far right side when the attempt went off the hand of a Missouri S&T Miner. The Flyers were given a penalty kick, but junior Amy Foran (Batavia, Ill/Batavia)’s (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) shot went off the far right post.
“We can’t play like we did today against another team fighting for their GLVC Tournament lives,” head coach Chris Koenig said. “We gave up too many corners and they finally capitalized.”
Lewis is now 5-7-0 (3-4-0 GLVC) while the Lady Miners are 6-6-1 (3-5-1 GLVC). Lewis is at home on Tuesday for a non-conference match against Houston Baptist at 3 p.m before playing at Drury and Rockhurst next weekend.
“We had a chance to make things easier for ourselves today but didn’t do it,” Koenig said. “But I think the battle for the tournament is going to come down to the final games and we’ll get back in conference play next weekend.”
A Catholic University sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields.
