ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis women’s soccer team tied Houston Baptist 1-1 in a non-conference game at the Lewis Soccer Field on Tuesday afternoon. Playing their third game in five days, the Flyers used 20 players against the Huskies. The substitutions fueled an attack that finished with 16 shots by 12 different players. Lewis held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
“This was a good chance to play against a Division I team and give some people some opportunities,” head coach Chris Koenig said. “I was happy with our performance, but not the final result.”
Freshman Monica Danek (Elk Grove Village, Ill./James B. Conant) started the match, playing the first half and making three saves. Sophomore Andrea Iossi (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport North) was inserted at half. She recorded three saves and allowed no goals in 65 minutes.
Junior Amy Foran (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) was all over the field, recording three shots on goal and the Flyers’ only goal. She headed in a free kick from senior Erin Beddows (Ada, Mich./Lowell) to knot it up at 47:26. Houston Baptist had the lead after Felisha Gonzalez scored, assisted by Ana Viscariello, at 36:22.
The Flyers had a chance go ahead with just under three minutes remaining. Foran delivered a long cross from the left side and the Huskies’ goaltender came out to grab the cross but failed to control it. Freshman Kelsie Brown (Warren, Mich./Cousino) rushed towards the loose ball but couldn’t pound it home.
The Flyers had other opportunities, including two long free kicks by Beddows that Houston Baptist goaltender Michelle Rich had to make jumping saves to deflect.
“We created many more chances today because we possessed the ball better,” Koenig said. “Unfortunately we couldn’t come up with the finishing goal. As we return to conference play we will need to get that one extra goal that really matters.”
Houston Baptist is now 7-5-1 while the Flyers are 5-7-1. Lewis plays at Drury on Friday night.
