Springfield, Mo. – It’s not how you start, but how you finish.

Despite surrendering a goal in the first two minutes of the match, the #21 Lewis men’s soccer team, led by a late score from senior midfielder Cory Mastey (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), rallied for the 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference road victory over Drury at Harrison Stadium on Friday night.

Mastey scored with just 4:19 left in regulation to break a 1-all tie and give the Flyers their eighth-straight win of the season. Mastey, who has a team-best nine goals on the season, has scored at least one point in Lewis’ last six games.

"It was a very tense, physical, championship level sort of game," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "Drury is a very dangerous team. We stepped up to the challenge, played well and got the results we wanted."

With the victory, Lewis improves to 12-1 overall and 7-1 in GLVC play, while Drury falls to 9-4-1 on the season and 6-3-1 in conference action.

Drury got on the board quickly as senior Marco Cherisma scored from 17 yards out, just 1:50 into the contest.

Lewis evened the score at 1-apiece in the second half as junior Nestor Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) pounded home a loose ball at the 59:06 mark. Hernandez is second to Mastey in goals scored for the Flyers this season with eight tallies.

Lewis senior goalkeeper Anthony Szymel (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) made four saves between the posts for the Flyers to earn his 12th win of the season. Drury goaltender Logan Hoffman stopped six shots on the evening.

Lewis is back in action on Sunday (Oct. 19) afternoon, as the Flyers travel to Kansas City to square off with No. 9 Rockhurst at 2:30 p.m.

A Catholic University sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The mid-sized university is being honored for the fifth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report. For more information please visit
