Kansas City, Mo. – The Lewis men’s soccer team knew that they would be in for a battle, as the No. 21 Flyers took on No. 9 Rockhurst in a showdown for Great Lakes Valley Conference supremacy on Sunday afternoon.
Both teams did not disappoint as both Lewis and Rockhurst fought tooth and nail, but neither could emerge victorious as the match ended in a 0-0 tie.
The match marked the first time since November 11, 2004 that the Flyers were involved in a scoreless game as Lewis and UW-Parkside found themselves in a 0-0 deadlock in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Rangers went on to win that match in penalty kicks.
With the tie, Lewis moves to 12-1-1 overall and 7-1-1 in GLVC play, while Rockhurst’s record goes to 12-1-2 on the season and 8-0-2 in conference action.
The wind was a big factor in the contest, as Rockhurst had the wind in the first half and totaled 11 shots, while the Flyers had it in the second half and launched 10 shots. In all, Rockhurst finished with 17 total shots and six shots on goal, while Lewis had 16 total shots and five shots on goal.
Lewis senior goalkeeper Anthony Szymel (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) made six saves between the posts for the Flyers, while Rockhurst goalkeeper Chad Becker stopped five Lewis shots on the afternoon.
Lewis is back in action on Friday (Oct. 24) afternoon, as the Flyers play host to Missouri-St. Louis at 12 p.m.
