No. 22 Women's Volleyball Dominate In Sweep Of Upper Iowa

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The No. 22 Lewis University women’s volleyball team swept their 13th match of the season in a 25-10, 25-21, 25-21 non-conference victory over Upper Iowa on Tuesday evening.

Nine different Flyers recorded a kill against the Peacocks. Freshman Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence) tallied a match-best 10 kills while hitting .333 with seven digs and two blocks (one solo). Junior Stephanie Sagat (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) had seven kills in two sets. She recorded three straight aces in set three. Sophomore Rachel Ruedi (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet Seymour) added 25 assists, five digs, four kills and three blocks (one solo).

“It is nice to get people in who haven’t played,” head coach Lorelee Smith said. “They bring extra energy that people who have been playing don’t have at this point in the season.”

Lewis dominated the opening set, using an 11-2 run. Set two was tighter, but the Flyers turned a 13-11 deficit into a 15-13 lead with four straight points. Lewis held a slim 22-21 advantage till scoring the final three points. Senior Justina Begemann (Odessa, Mo./Odessa) scored set point on a solo block.

Lewis used a 7-1 run in the middle of set three to grab a 16-11 lead. The Peacocks got within two at 23-21, but kills by Sagat and freshman Faith Watson (Oregon, Ill./Oregon) ended the night for Upper Iowa.

“I’m really proud of the freshmen,” Smith said. “Both Faith and Colleen were great. They were happy and smiling and did positive things. Both really lifted the spirit of the team.”

The Flyers out-hit the Peacocks .234 to .074. Lewis held advantages in kills (37-26), digs (42-33) and blocks (7-5).

The Flyers are now 21-5. Upper Iowa falls to 10-14. Lewis hosts Eckerd on Friday at Neil Carey Arena for another non-conference match.
