Romeoville, Ill. – All it takes is one second.

With one second remaining in the opening half, Lewis defender Joey De Francesco (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) launched a 30-yard rocket past Missouri-St. Louis goalie Tim Boruff to help lift the No. 17 Flyers to the 3-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Tritons at Lewis University Soccer Field on Friday afternoon.

With the victory, Lewis extends their unbeaten streak to 10 matches improves to 13-1-1 overall and 8-1-1 in GLVC play, while the visiting Tritons fall to 6-10-1 on the season and 2-9 in conference action.

De Francesco’s tally came shortly after UMSL narrowed Lewis’ early lead to 2-1 following a goal by Kyle Wogtech at the 42:39 mark of the contest.

Lewis opened up the scoring midway through the opening period as senior midfielder Cory Mastey (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season off a free kick from junior Justin Vander Heyden (Palatine, Ill./Palatine). The Flyers extended their lead to 2-0 as sophomore Mardoche Beya (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) scored his fifth goal of the campaign at the 30:15 mark in the first half as his blast ricocheted off a UMSL defender for the tally.

“We came out in the first half and did the things we needed to do offensively,” Lewis University head men’s soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. “We had some decent opportunities and we made the most of them.”

Lewis senior goaltender Anthony Szymel (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) stopped six shots on the afternoon to pick up his 13th victory of the season.

Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 26) at noon, as the Flyers will host Southern Indiana for ‘Senior Day’ at 12 p.m. at the Lewis University Soccer Field.
