ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – A 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-18) non-conference victory over Eckerd on Friday night extends the Flyers’ win-streak at Neil Carey Arena to 19 matches dating back to last season.
“It is really good to get competition this good this late in the season from a team outside of conference,” head coach Lorelee Smith said. I appreciate them coming up here to play us.”
Sophomore Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) hit .550 with 14 kills. Defensively she added four block assists. Junior Stephanie Sagat (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) had a match-high 16 kills and added 10 digs. Senior Justina Begemann (Odessa, Mo./Odessa) finished with 13 kills, six digs and four blocks (one solo).
“Offensively, the combination of Justina, Stephanie and Danielle is pretty difficult for other teams to defend,” Smith said.
Sophomore Rachel Ruedi (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet Seymour) averaged 12 assists per set with 48 total assists. She also recorded a career high and match high of 20 digs. Sophomore Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) tallied 15 digs.
“Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) came in and did a fantastic job on both serve receive and defense,” Smith said. “She settled the team down and gave us ball control.”
The Flyers had zero aces through three sets, but freshman Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence) started set four with an ace. The Flyers then added four more ace serves in the set, including two by senior Lauren Hatter (Avon, Ind./Avon). Lewis finished off the match by limiting Eckerd to a .065 hitting percentage in set four.
The Flyers never led in the opening set, being out-hit .308 to .250. But the Flyers turned it on in the second set and never looked back. The Flyers hit .400 with 16 kills and two errors in the third set.
