ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University women's soccer team knew they would need two victories in the final weekend of the regular season to have a chance to quality for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. With the Flyers' 1-0 victory over Missouri-St. Louis on Friday afternoon, Lewis is halfway there.
Senior Caitlin Kelly (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) scored the game's only goal at 32:56. She launched a shot from 20 yards out that zoomed past the Tritons' goalkeeper. The Flyers held on the rest of the way.
"The effort today was fantastic." head coach Chris Koenig said. "I think we laid out what was at stake, they understood that things would come down to this last weekend and they responded as opposed to letting it get to them."
Sophomore Megan George (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) made four saves for her third shutout of the season. She came up with other solid plays that don't show up in the stats. With 23:11 left in the second half, the Tritons' Anne Nesbit raced towards a pass in front of the goal. George ran forward and pounced on the ball just an instant before Nesbit could reach the pass.
When asked to identify one player who performed exceptionally well on Friday, Koenig pointed to the play of several parts of the team.
"Our midfield really stepped up and our backs were consistent just like they've been most of the season. Up top we did a nice job of pressuring their backs," Koenig said.
Missouri-St. Louis falls to 6-9-1 (5-5-1 GLVC). The Flyers improve to 6-9-1 (4-6-0 GLVC). A win over Southern Indiana on Sunday would give the Flyers their most overall wins since 2000 and most conference victories since 1997.
"We need to know the job isn't done yet. We need to win on Sunday and get some help," Koenig stressed. "I want the players to enjoy the win tonight, regroup tomorrow and have that same energy on Sunday, because it is going to be a battle."
Sunday is also senior day at the Lewis Soccer Field. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
A Catholic University sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields.
