Rolla, Mo. - Behind the strength of two top-10 finishes, the Lewis University Women's Cross Country team placed fifth overall at the 2008 6K Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Cross Country Championships, hosted by Missouri S&T, at the Missouri S&T Golf Course on Saturday afternoon.
Lewis sophomore Kathryn Hague (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Assisi Academy) took home third-place with a time of 21:54.54, while senior teammate Becky Herbert (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) captured eighth-place overall with a mark of 22:29.43. That performance earned both Hague and Herbert All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors.
"It was a phenomenal performance by both Kathryn and Becky," Lewis Assistant Cross Country Coach Adrien Ricci said. "They each ran with the top runners in the conference and never let go. I'm real proud of the both of them."
Lewis freshman Pierra Sobodas (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet Township) finished 30th overall, followed by a 51st-place mark of 24:39.25 from freshman Julie Jarrett (Champaign, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour). Lewis freshman Ashley Lucas (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward) (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward) rounded out the top five for the Flyers with a 50th-place finish of 24:37.53.
Southern Indiana won the overall meet with 39 points, followed by UW-Parkside (64), Northern Kentucky (80), Bellarmine (104), Lewis (122), Indianapolis (153), Drury (221), Missouri S&T (222), Saint Joseph's (229) and Kentucky Wesleyan (287).
UW-Parkside's Jessica Monson won the 6K race with a time of 20:43.56, followed by Southern Indiana's Mary Ballinger (20:59.43), Hague and Northern Kentucky's Jenna Siemer (21:56.90).
Lewis is back in action in two weeks, as the Flyers travel to Big Rapids, Michigan to participate in the NCAA Division II Regional Championships.
