Romeoville, Ill. – Lewis junior forward Nestor Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) posted two goals and an assist against Southern Indiana, helping the No. 17 Flyers to the 3-0 whitewash over the visiting Screaming Eagles on ‘Senior Day’ at the Lewis University Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.

With Hernandez’s two scores, he is now tied for the team lead with senior Cory Mastey (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) in goals scored with 10 on the campaign.

With the victory, Lewis improves to 14-1-1 overall and 9-1-1 in GLVC play, while Southern Indiana ends their season with a mark of 7-10 on the season and 4-8 in conference action. The Flyers enter the GLVC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will host No. 7 Bellarmine at noon on Sunday, November 2nd at Lewis University Soccer Field.

Hernandez opened the scoring in the first half as he found the back of the net at the 15:57 mark. Mastey, along with sophomore Mardoche Beya (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton), each collected assists on the play.

Lewis took a 1-0 lead into halftime and the score remained that way until Hernandez posted his second tally of the afternoon at the 59:13 mark, assisted by junior Charlie Bucio (Chicago, Ill./Juarez). The Flyers did not waste any time tacking on to that score, as junior defender Joey De Francesco (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) scored just 49 seconds later, assisted by Hernandez and Bucio, for the final score.

The Flyers pounded Southern Indiana goalkeeper Andrew Haley early and often as Lewis had both a season-best in shots (25) and shots on goal (14). Haley finished the afternoon with nine saves. Lewis goaltenders Anthony Szymel (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) and Nick Veselka (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) split duties between the posts for the Flyers and each collected two saves on the afternoon for the shutout.

“We wanted a shutout heading into the tournament,” Lewis University head men’s soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. “It would have been nice to score a few more in the first half and put the game away. We had our opportunities and their keeper played very well.”

Prior to the match, Lewis honored Veselka, Szymel, Chris Buczkowski (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove), Jorge De Jesus (Elmwood Park, Ill./Elmwood Park), Craig McIntosh (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and Mastey as a part of ‘Senior Day’.

A Catholic University sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The mid-sized university is being honored for the fifth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report. For more information please visit www.lewisu.edu.
