ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis University women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Southern Indiana on Sunday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest. The two teams battled cold, wind, rain and a little bit of sleet but in the end it was one single shot that did in the Flyers.
Both teams spent most of the first half attempting to find the best way to deal with a strong wind and occasional rain. It seemed as soon as the second half started the squads had a new surprise for them, sleet. The precipitation continued for approximately 10 minutes, only to be replaced by bone chilling bursts of wind.
“It’s obviously not the way we wanted to finish up the season, and its unfortunate we had to play the game in these weather conditions but we can’t control that,” head coach Chris Koenig said.
The Flyers’ best chance in the first half came with just over a minute left. Sophomore Jessica Summers-Hernandez (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) created some space up top and fired a rocket from 25 yards out. It was too high for the USI goalkeeper to get a hand on, but it clanged off the crossbar instead of going into the back of the net.
USI found more shots than Lewis in the second half, but with just over 20 minutes remaining it seemed the teams were destined to play overtime. Then USI’s Alison Conquest fired a shot from approximately 35 yards out. Lewis sophomore goalkeeper Megan George (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) made a leaping effort at the shot, but it was too high for her to reach. Unlike Summers-Hernandez’s shot, this one slipped in just under the crossbar for the only score of the game.
At 81:08 Summers-Hernandez took another deep shot trying to tie it up, but this one was just over the crossbar.
USI improves to 5-11-1 (2-9-1 GLVC).
Seniors Caitlin Kelly (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), Courtney Kettel (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg), Sarah Ybarra (East Moline, Ill./United Township), Heather Ywaniw (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere), Kari Huizinga (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) and Elaine Felten (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) were recognized as part of Senior Day festivities before the start of the contest.
“We could sniff it, but fell short of our goal of reaching the conference tournament,” Koenig said. “We’ll miss our seniors, but we have a good group returning and hopefully we can make some new additions to reach that goal next season.”
The Flyers finish the season 6-10-1 (4-7-0 GLVC). It’s the first time the Flyers have won four GLVC games in back-to-back seasons since 1997 and six overall contests in back-to-back years since 2000.
