Lewis Women's Tennis Upends Quincy, 6-3

Oct. 3, 2008

Romeoville, Ill. – After competing for much of the fall on the road, the Lewis women’s tennis squad were happy to be home, as the Flyers earned the 6-3 victory over Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Quincy at the Lewis University Tennis Courts on a blustery Friday fall afternoon, extending their winning streak to three matches.

Lewis head women’s tennis coach Brett Bridel was impressed with his squad’s performance, despite the loss of top player Melanie Sandberg (Motala, Sweden/Platenskolan) to injury.

“The matches are always tough (against Quincy) and we’re still missing Melanie (Sandberg),” Bridel said. “Everyone had to move up and I thought everyone responded well and battled hard in the tough conditions.

“It’s a good start and hopefully we can get some momentum from that.”

Lewis freshmen Bayley Brown (Evansville, Ind./Evansville Central) and Katie Hargrove (O’Fallon, Ill./O’Fallon) got the ball rolling for the Flyers with a 8-6 win over Quincy’s Michelle Bertelsman and Megan Marsot. Hargrove would also claim a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Lauren Henry at No. 2 singles, while Brown dropped Bernadette Hayden, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

Flyers sophomore Clare Kessler (Onalaska, Wis./Aquinas) and senior Jordan Lynde (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) paired at No. 3 doubles for the 8-5 win over Pam and Leslie Ganer. Kessler put up a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win over Marsot at No. 5 singles as well.

Lewis senior Agata Wojciechowska (Des Plaines, Ill./Oakton C.C.) added a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Anele Novak at No. 1 singles.

The Flyers are back in action on Tuesday, October 14, as they welcome St. Francis (IL) to the Lewis University Tennis Courts. First serve is set for 2:30 p.m.
