ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - A season-high .390 hitting percentage drove the No. 18 Lewis offense to a 25-16, 25-21, 25-18 sweep of conference-foe Southern Indiana on Friday evening. The victory extends the Flyers overall win streak to 14 matches. Lewis has won a program best 16 straight Great Lakes Valley Conference matches dating back to 2007.
The Flyers finished with a dominating 51-30 edge in kills. Three Flyers finished with double-digit kills. Junior Stephanie Sagat (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) was on from the start, recording five kills in the first set and eight in the second. She finished with a double-double of 16 kills (.500 hitting percentage) and 14 digs. Senior Justina Begemann (Odessa, Mo./Odessa) had 10 kills and eight digs. Sophomore Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinix) added 10 kills of her own and eight digs. Sophomore Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) recorded seven kills with only one error.
"Stephanie, Lauren and Justina were amazing tonight," head coach Lorelee Smith said. "We just kept feeding them and they continually put it away."
Sophomore setter Rachel Ruedi (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet Seymour) was the one making it happen, totaling 47 assists, second most in a three-set match in the GLVC this year.
Set two, in which the Flyers recorded an impressive 19 kills, was actually the closest. Southern Indiana rallied back from a five-point deficit to tie it at 13. The Flyers took another lead only to have the Screaming Eagles get within one at 21-20. But Sagat had three of the Flyers' final four points to push Lewis to the win.
Lewis is now 15-3 and 7-0 GLVC. Southern Indiana falls to 7-10, 2-6 GLVC. The squad was helped by a vocal crowd pushing them on to a homecoming victory.
"I loved how much energy the team had from start to finish," Smith said. "I think much of that energy was due to our amazing fans and the pep rally before the match. The coaching staff and players are all very thankful for that type of support."
The Flyers now hit the road for four seven straight matches away from Neil Carey Arena.
"We have two very important away weekends in a row," Smith said. "To be successful everyone is going to have to be ready."
Lewis starts that road stretch at Quincy on Thursday, Oct. 9.
