Oct. 9, 2008

Box Score

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 18 Lewis University women's volleyball team won their 15th match in a row with a 3-1 (25-22, 27-25, 18-25, 25-18) conference victory over Quincy on Thursday evening. Lewis controlled the net with a 17 to 4 edge in blocks. Sophomore Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) set a Great Lakes Valley Conference season high with 14 blocks (4 solo).

"Danielle was huge in sets one and two. I don't think they were ready for her offense or her block," head coach Lorelee Smith said of Mount who also added seven kills. "She came out on fire and they had to adjust who they were setting to."

Junior Stephanie Sagat (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) recorded a double-double a match-high 15 kills and 14 digs.

"Sagat played very well. Anything we gave to her she was able to get a kill from," Smith said.

Sophomore Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinix) added 16 digs and eight kills. Senior Lauren Hatter (Avon, Ind./Avon) recorded 15 digs. Senior Justina Begemann (Odessa, Mo./Odessa) added 11 digs.

The Flyers jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the opening set but Quincy rallied to get within two at 22-20. But kills by Hatter, Sagat and Begemann put the set away. Lewis took another early lead in set two, this time by a 11-5 score. But the Lady Hawks came back to grab a 14-13 lead. Lewis responded by taking a 16-15 lead. The two squads traded points down the stretch till Lewis junior Kim Richards (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mother McAuley) ended the set with an ace. After Quincy controlled set three, Lewis out-hit Quincy .296-.031 in set four. Junior Sara deBuhr (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) had two kills and two aces, all in the fourth set.

"Sara came in and played very smart," Smith said of deBuhr's play. "She is why we won that fourth set."

For the match, the Flyers out-hit Quincy .195 to .090. The Lady Hawks are now 8-13 (2-8 GLVC) while Lewis is now 16-3 and still a perfect 8-0 in the GLVC.

"We jumped out to a good start, but they made adjustments to exploit our weaknesses. To their credit they dug everything," Smith said of the Lady Hawks' 68 digs. "But we just kept hitting and got the victory."

The Flyers are at Missouri-St. Louis tomorrow evening and Missouri S&T on Saturday.
