EAST PEORIA, Ill. - Sophomore Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) netted a game-high 26 points with nine rebounds and five blocks but Division I Bradley topped the Flyers 77-69 on Sunday evening in an exhibition contest.
“Jenny had a great start to her sophomore season,” head coach Lisa Carlsen said. “Her numbers were phenomenal and she was solid at the line.”
The Flyers took a quick four-point lead in the opening minutes thanks to a free throw by Turpel and a trey by senior Kelly Dianis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central). The Braves responded with a 7-0 run before two threes by junior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) helped give the Flyers a 15-9 advantage.
Lewis led for the majority of the first half till Bradley took a 31-30 lead with 3:03 left on a jumper by Michelle Lund. The Braves would take a 37-33 advantage into the break.
A Turpel layup and a Dianis 3-pointer got the Flyers within two at 42-40 with 16:41 left. The Braves opened up a 47-40 lead and looked to be pulling away until an 8-2 Lewis run featuring three impressive Turpel layups put the Flyers within one.
It was close throughout the majority of the second half, however down the stretch the Braves pulled away to earn the victory.
Dianis finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Monaco added nine points. Sophomore Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) totaled nine points and five rebounds.
“Kelly (Monaco) played well considering this was the first time she saw significant minutes,” Carlsen said. “Devon has been looking solid in practice and it definitely transferred into the game situation tonight.”
Lewis held an 8-3 edge in blocks, but were out-rebounded 42-37 and committed 25 turnovers to the Braves’ 15. However the Flyers got to the free throw line 22 times to Bradley’s 10 attempts.
“Seeing us to get to the free throw line tonight was huge,” Carlsen said. “Those are the types of things you like to see in an exhibition game.”
The Flyers get their final tune-up in an exhibition at Illinois-Chicago on Thursday at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on the Lewis Sports Network.
