Lewis 82, Northwood 80 in PDF Format
Romeoville, Ill. – Two out of the first three games of the season for the Lewis University men’s basketball season had been decided by less than four points.
Saturday’s contest against Northwood provided the typical drama, as Lewis fought back from a four-point deficit with less than two minutes remaining to earn the 82-80 non-conference victory in their home opener over the Timberwolves at Neil Carey Arena.
Lewis senior guard Brandon Dagans (Harvey, Ill./Thornton) topped the Flyers with 23 points, followed by 22 points from sophomore guard Dennis Thomas (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech). The Flyers also received 15 points from senior forward Jason Genova (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick/Saint Xavier) and 10 points off the bench from freshman forward Matt Toth (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg).
“When you win the close games, you get some confidence and start to believe,” Lewis University head men’s basketball coach Scott Trost said. “We’ve been in these situations before. We know what it takes to win, we know what to do and we know how to act.”
With the victory, Lewis improves to 3-1 overall, while the Timberwolves fall to 1-1 on the season.
Northwood guard Aaron Simpson led the Timberwolves with 15 points, while teammates Marcus Moore (10 rebounds) and Mark Barnes each added 14 points in the defeat. Northwood guard Chris Johnson chipped in 10 points for the Timberwolves.
The Timberwolves held a 78-74 lead over Lewis with 1:59 remaining, following a jumper from Johnson. Lewis sophomore forward Lonnie Lawrence (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington) cut that lead in half at 78-76 as he tipped in a Marty Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) miss with 1:23 left.
Northwood turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and Dagans headed straight to the rim, converted the lay-up, drew the foul and knocked down his free throw to put the Flyers ahead for good at 79-78 with 51 seconds remaining.
Lewis has a week off before returning to Neil Carey Arena to square off with local rival, St. Francis (IL) for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, November 29th.
