ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Redshirt freshman Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) had 29 points and sophomore Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) added 20 in Lewis' 91-78 non-conference victory over St. Francis on Saturday evening.
Carbaugh shot 9-of-13 from the floor and 10-of-12 from the line. She also grabbed six boards and recorded a steal.
"Devon asserted herself in the bottom half of the lane and finished," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "For a redshirt freshman who is getting her first real game minutes to do that was impressive."
Turpel was 9-of-15, making 2-of-3 from the charity stripe and grabbing seven rebounds.
"Devon and Jenny had big numbers but I thought we played as a team today," Carlsen said. "Our flow was better and we really played together."
The numbers support Carlsen's claim of a team victory. Six Flyers had six or more points. The Flyers held a 42-31 edge in rebounds, including a 15-10 advantage on the offensive glass. The difference in the game came at the line. The Flyers made 32-of-39 free throws while St. Francis connected on only 20-of-27 free throws.
Sophomore Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) set career highs in assists (7) and rebounds (8) while throwing in 10 points. Sophomore Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) tied a career high with 13 points in her first start of the season.
The game was tied at 22 when Currin knocked down a triple with 6:40 left in the first half. The Flyers never trailed the rest of the way.
Lewis set the pace early in the second half, out-scoring St. Francis 21-11. Points by Carbaugh twice stretched the Flyers' lead to a game-high 16 points.
"At halftime I told the team if we could force them to beat us for 20 minutes in the half court we'd be in good shape," Carlsen said. "They got to the line more than I would have liked but we eliminated chances in transition."
The Flyers hit 90 points for the first time since scoring 92 at Kentucky Wesleyan on Feb. 22, 2007. Lewis improves to 2-2 while St. Francis falls to 3-3.
Lewis hosts in-region opponent Ferris State on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
