DENVER – Sophomore Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) scored 22 points but the Flyers fell to non-conference foe Metro State 71-62 on Saturday afternoon.
The Flyers fell behind early, trailing 38-25 at half.
“I was very frustrated with how we played in the first half,” head coach Lisa Carlsen said. “We beat them by four in the second half, but we lost the game in the first.”
Redshirt freshman Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) scored 10 points and added six boards. Both Turpel and Carbaugh finished 6-for-8 from the free throw line.
Senior Jenna Mooberry (Byron, Ill./Byron) scored 15 points. Lewis shot 42 percent for the game, but only 18 percent from long range. Both teams turned it over 20 times. The Flyers made 17-of-24 free throws while Metro State connected on 15-of-22.
Jasmine Cervantes led Metro State with 16 points. Megan Sinclair finished with 15 points.
The Flyers fall to 3-4. Metro State improves to 1-4. The Flyers open Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Thursday when they host Southern Indiana at 5:30 p.m.
