Box Score
CHICAGO - Senior Kelly Dianis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) scored a game-high 16 points but the UIC Flames topped the Lewis Flyers 68-60 in a women's basketball exhibition contest on Thursday evening.
A layup by sophomore Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) opened the scoring, but the Flames controlled most of the early action. The Flyers tied it at 15 with eight minutes left in the half after a trey and a layup by senior Jenna Mooberry (Byron, Ill./Byron). UIC responded with three straight baskets to take back the momentum before another Mooberry three put the Flyers within one at 24-23. A trey by Dianis at the top of the arc tied it at 26 then a basket by Mooberry knotted it at 28 going into half.
The Flyers grabbed the lead early in the second with a Dianis trey, but the Flames opened up a nine-point advantage six minutes into the half. But back came the Flyers, and not surprising it was a Dianis trey that got the Flyers to within one at 47-46. A Turpel layup tied it at 48 before Lewis took their first lead of the second on two Dianis free throws. Turnovers and foul trouble aided the Flames' surge to a 60-53 lead with five minutes remaining. Another Dianis trey got the Flyers within a possession at 63-60 with under two remaining, but UIC held on down the stretch for the eight-point victory.
Turpel finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Mooberry scored 12, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots. Sophomore Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) added nine points.
The difference in the game came at the line. UIC made 22-of-37 attempts, while the Flyers only got to the line 12 times, making 11.
The Flyers open regular season play on the road. Lewis plays Lake Superior State at noon on Nov. 15 and Michigan Tech at 4:30 p.m. the following day.
