LOUISVILLE, Ky. – No. 22 Lewis swept Bellarmine 25-16, 26-24, 25-23 on Friday night to clinch the right to host the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament next Friday-Sunday. In the victory, senior Lauren Hatter (Avon, Ind./Avon) recorded 10 digs to set a new Lewis career record with 1,421. She surpassed Colleen Quinlan’s record by one.

“Hatter’s record is a great accomplishment,” head coach Lorelee Smith said. “Bellarmine fed a lot of balls outside, and she and (junior Stephanie) Sagat stepped up.”

Junior Stephanie Sagat (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs. She hit .435 and added a solo block. Juniors Kim Richards (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mother McAuley) and Sara deBuhr (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) each had eight kills. deBuhr continues to be a monster at the net, recording seven solo blocks against the Knights.

The opening set was all Lewis, but the next two were tight. Set two featured 11 ties and four lead changes while set three was tied 14 times and had nine lead changes.

The Flyers led the second set 16-13 but the Knights rallied to tie it three times till taking a 23-22 lead. A Bellarmine service error tied it up but then a kill by the Knights’ Emily Beckman gave Bellarmine set point. Then it became the deBuhr show, as she recorded a kill and back-to-back blocks to give Lewis the win.

No team held a larger lead than two points in set three. As the teams traded leads it looked like the Knights might force a fourth set after grabbing a 22-21 lead. A Lewis timeout paused Bellarmine’s momentum and the Flyers scored four of the next five points to finish off the match. Sagat had two kills during the final stretch.

The Flyers improve to 28-6 (16-1 GLVC) while Bellarmine is 7-17 (7-10 GLVC). Lewis finishes the regular season on Saturday at Northern Kentucky, but all eyes turn towards the GLVC Tournament at Neil Carey Arena next weekend.

“Everyone is very excited about hosting the tournament,” Smith said. “This was a big team goal and they worked hard and achieved it. Playing in front of our fans is going to be the biggest advantage of hosting the tournament.”
