ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis women's basketball team trailed No. 13 Tusculum by just one point at halftime, but a Tusculum surge in the second lifted the Pioneers to a 75-58 victory over the Flyers on Wednesday night in non-conference action.
Sophomore Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) set a career high with 27 points while grabbing seven rebounds and adding three steals. She scored the first bucket of the second to give the Flyers a one point advantage. But from there on the Pioneers were able to push the tempo, taking a seven-point advantage at 40-33 with 17:19 left.
"They shot better than us because they were shooting more layups, it's as easy as that," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "They did a better job of finishing in the second."
Part of the reason for the Pioneers' second-half push was sophomore Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) picking up her third foul early in the second half.
"Kady is one our tougher players and we missed her toughness in the second half," Carlsen said.
The Flyers controlled much of the first half, taking a nine-point lead with 8:55 left on two Currin layups. Tusculum rallied back but Turpel scored the Flyers' last six baskets of the half to get Lewis within one at the break.
Freshman Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) had her seventh straight game of double-digit points with 11. Currin added seven points and three steals.
The Flyers return to action on Friday, hosting Blackburn in a non-conference contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
