ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Flyers made a season-high 33 field goals in a blowout 83-44 non-conference victory over Blackburn on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The 39-point win is the largest margin of victory during Lisa Carlsen's reign as head coach.
The Flyers dominated in virtually every category, including a 47-30 rebounding edge. Lewis held a 42-18 edge in points in the paint and recorded 25 assists to Blackburn's four.
"We moved the ball and it opened up some opportunities," Carlsen said.
Ten Lewis turnovers in the first half led to ten Blackburn points. In the second half the Beavers scored zero points off only seven Lewis turnovers, and the Flyers pulled away for the big victory.
Sophomore Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) continues to be a force in the paint, scoring a game-high 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting. She also grabbed eight boards, totaled six assists, recorded three blocks and nabbed two steals.
Freshman Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) grabbed 12 boards and missed a double-double by just a basket with eight points. She also had five assists. Sophomore Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) set a career-high with four made trifectas to score 17 points.
The Flyers' bench outscored Blackburn's 23-7. Freshman Sierra West (Hartford, Wis./Slinger) connected on 3-of-4 treys to score nine points. Senior Mandie Morelock (Poplar Grove, Ill./North Boone) also threw in nine points.
"It was nice to see everyone come in and contribute," Carlsen said.
The Flyers shot 47.1 percent from the floor. Lewis limited the Beavers to just 30.2 percent shooting and just six made field goals in the second half.
The Flyers improve to 6-5, Blackburn falls to 1-8. Lewis takes a break for the holidays and returns to the hardwood on Jan. 2 at Rockhurst.
