ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Defense was the name of the game for the Lewis University women's basketball team on Thursday evening. The Flyers limited Southern Indiana to just 33.9 percent shooting to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both schools 69-61. The victory also marked the Flyers' 500th win in program history.
Southern Indiana held a slight 30-27 lead at the break but the Flyers outscored the Screaming Eagles 25-10 to start the second. Lewis did it with solid defense while finishing on the other end.
Sophomore Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) was the Flyers' leading scorer, scoring a career-high 20 points in just 25 minutes of action due to foul trouble. She knocked down 3-of-7 treys.
"Kelly was really on tonight, but her shot selection was also very good," head coach Lisa Carlsen said.
Freshman Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) added 13 points, 10 in the second half including several key baskets down the stretch. Sophomore Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) played only 16 minutes due to foul trouble and also scored 13.
Junior Amy Smith (Southgate, Mich./Anderson) provided a spark off the bench, adding 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
"Amy knows what is expected out of her and she did a great job tonight," Carlsen said.
Southern Indiana shot only 2-of-12 from long range. The Screaming Eagles held a dominating 44-31 edge in rebounds due to their size but the Flyers had success getting to the basket, edging Southern Indiana 28-26 in points in the paint.
The Screaming Eagles advanced within seven on three separate occasions in the second half, but two Turpel baskets and a Carbaugh layup held back Southern Indiana.
"It was a great team win," Carlsen said. "Everybody did their job tonight."
Lewis improves to 4-4 (1-0 GLVC). Southern Indiana falls to 4-3 (0-1 GLVC). Lewis continues conference play on Saturday at Missouri-St. Louis at 1 p.m.
