ST. LOUIS - Five Flyers scored in double digits to help the Lewis women's basketball team defeat Missouri-St. Louis 87-64 in the Flyers' Great Lakes Valley Conference road opener on Saturday afternoon.

Lewis trailed the Tritons 13-11 seven minutes into the game. Then in an instant, it was all Flyers. Lewis finished the half on a 31-9 run to take a 20-point lead into half. Lewis scored the first six points of the second half and would take as large as a 30-point advantage in the second half.

"We rebounded well and really pushed the ball," head coach Lisa Carlsen said of the push in the first half. "We got great shots in transition, and that gave us some separation."

Igniting the run was freshman guard Sierra West (Hartford, Wis./Slinger). She scored 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting, all in the first half

"Sierra had five to ten minutes where she really asserted herself and hit some big shots," Carlsen said.

The Flyers used a 33-26 rebounding edge to fuel a 17-4 advantage in fast break points. Lewis recorded seven steals and had 26 assists to the Tritons' 13.

"We really played together today," Carlsen said. "I can't remember the last time we had 26 assists."

Freshman Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) had another impressive game. She scored 15 points, grabbing eight rebounds, dishing a game-high six assists and adding one block.

"Devon was efficient on both ends," Carlsen said. "She doesn't turn the ball over, she finishes in the lane, and she never panics."

Sophomore Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) scored a game high 16 points. Senior Mandie Morelock (Poplar Grove, Ill./North Boone) hit 5-of-6 from the floor to record 13 points. Sophomore Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) scored 13 points, on 3-of-6 from long range while recording four assists.

"Kelly was in foul trouble but got a lot accomplished in 16 minutes," Carlsen said.

As a team, the Flyers shot 62.7 percent from the floor, including connecting on 9-of-15 from long range.

"We shot it well but that was due to taking good shots," Carlsen said, "We had the right people taking the right shots."

Missouri-St. Louis falls to 1-6 (0-2 GLVC). Lewis improves to 5-4 (2-0 GLVC). The Flyers take a break for finals before returning to action on Dec. 17 against No. 14 Tusculum.
