Junior Billy Sahagian notched 10 kills but the Flyers fell to No. 8 Ohio State 3-0 (32-30, 30-25, 30-27) in a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match Friday night.
The Flyers grabbed a 14-7 lead in game one with a 9-0 run. Junior Drew Pickering had two aces while Sahagian had two kills and an assisted block during the run. The Buckeyes chipped at the deficit and eventually tied the Flyers at 28. Sahagian responded with a kill but Robbie Klein tied it again at 29. Ohio State took the next point but it was tied at 30 after a service error by the Buckeyes. However, Pickering followed with a service error, and a blocking error by sophomore Mike Iandolo gave game one to the Buckeyes.
Game two was a tough start for the Flyers with the Buckeyes grabbing an early 6-1 lead. The Flyers rallied to get within two points four times before getting within one at 22-21 on a Pickering kill. Even so, Ohio State pulled away late.
Ohio State rallied to tie game three at 20 after Lewis jumped out to a 10-5 lead. Lewis tied it at 21 on a block by junior Alex Vigansky and freshman Brian Muesenfechter. A kill by senior Jared Dayton tied it again at 23. An Iandolo kill tied it at 24 but Ohio State scored five of the next six points to take the match.
Lewis out-blocked Ohio State 13 to 10 but the Buckeyes out-hit the Flyers .252 to .127. The Buckeyes' Brett Versen had 20 kills, nine digs and three aces. For Lewis, Iandolo registered 32 assists, six digs and six block assists. Vigansky notched five block assists and one solo. Dayton totaled nine kills, four blocks and one ace.
The Flyers are now 3-4 (0-2 MIVA) while the Buckeyes improved to 5-1 (4-0 MIVA). Lewis is at Mercyhurst for another MIVA match tomorrow.
