Junior David Kelnhofer hit .722 with 14 kills and only one error to help Lewis sweep non-conference opponent California Baptist (30-22, 30-25, 30-26) Saturday night in the final day of the Lewis Invitational.
The Flyers controlled the match, out-hitting (.500 to .259.) and out-blocking (8.0 to 3.0) the Lancers.
A 6-2 run in the opening game gave the Flyers a four-point lead at 13-9. Lewis out-hit California Baptist .579 to .231 to cruise to the eight point game one victory. Four ace serves in game two, including back-to-back aces by junior Drew Pickering, lifted the Flyers to a game two victory.
Game three was closer, with ten tie scores and five lead changes. California Baptist used a 5-1 run to grab a four-point advantage. The Lancers nursed this lead until the Flyers tied it at 25 on a kill by Pickering from junior Jordan Vidovic. Lewis grabbed their first lead at 26-25 on a powerful ace by sophomore Nathan Klaas. Lewis would surrender only one more point, before Pickering ended the match with three straight kills.
Pickering finished with nine kills, four aces, two digs and two block assists. Kelnhofer also notched 3 digs and two blocks. Sahagian had seven kills with no errors. Pickering and Sahagian were named to the Lewis Invitational all-tournament team.
California Baptist falls to 5-7 while the Flyers improve to 9-5. Lewis is at Carthage on Tuesday.
