ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Senior Stephan Bolt led all players with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but the Bellarmine Knights outscored Lewis 13-6 over the final 5:42 to come from behind and defeat the Flyers 65-63, Thursday evening at Neil Carey Arena.
The Flyers (18-8, 11-7) fell for the first time this season at home. It also was just the second time all season in which Lewis lost after holding a lead at the half. The Flyers were up by five to start the second half.
Bolt reached double-double territory for a 13th time this season. He was 8-for-9 from the floor and hit two free throws. He also grabbed three steals. Junior Brandon Dagans scored 12 points, dished out a team-best five assists and came up with five steals.
Freshman Dennis Thomas, Jr. added 12 points, and senior Dustin Warfield netted 10, hitting 2-of-3 from 3-point range.
The Flyers trailed by as many as six in the first half, but they closed the half on 15-4 run to take a five-point lead at the break. A trey by Warfield in the opening minute of the second put Lewis up by eight, and he added another 3-pointer with 13:30 to go to give Lewis its largest lead of the night at 11 points.
From there, however, the Knights began to chip away. A layup and a free throw by Mark Veith on the next possession cut the Flyers' lead to single digits once again. The Knights cut Lewis' lead to four points at 11:24, but junior Jason Genova answered with a trey to make it a seven-point game.
The Flyers' lead was still seven points with 9:08 to play, but consecutive turnovers by the Flyers combined with a layup and two free throws by the Knights cut it down to a three-point game.
Lewis led by just one with 4:54 to go before Bolt made a layup, but the Knights fired right back with a three from Adam Brames to tie the game with 4:00 to play. A free throw by Genova on the next possession put Lewis up by one, but the Knights got a layup on the next trip down the floor to take their first lead of the half with 2:49 left on the clock.
The Knights took advantage of a Lewis turnover and a missed 3-pointer on the next two possessions, hitting layups each time to open a five-point edge in the final minute and go on to the victory.
The Flyers conclude the regular season on Saturday, hosting Northern Kentucky at 3 p.m.
