Box Score

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Junior Lauren Martens scored a career-high 19 points but Quincy defeated Lewis 85-69 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers scored the first ten points of the game and eventually grabbed a 15-2 advantage on a layup by freshman Jenny Turpel. Turpel was a big reason for the Flyers' early success, scoring 11 points in the first six minutes. Senior Jennifer Green stole the ball and took it hard to the basket to give the Flyers a 20-5 lead with 10:14 left. But the Lady Hawks rallied and chipped the lead down to two points six minutes later on an 18-5 run. Quincy grabbed their first lead at 36-34 on a trey by Irby Whintae with 46 seconds left in the first. It was the final basket of the half and Quincy took the two-point advantage into halftime.

The Flyers got within a possession of Quincy at 55-52 with 12:17 left on a trey by junior Kelly Dianis. But after making 3-of-9 3-pointers in the first half, the Lady Hawks pulled away in the second half by making three on only four attempts. Quincy's three treys came in a two and half minute span that helped stretch their three point lead into a 13 point advantage with 8:14 left. The Lady Hawks controlled the game the rest of the way.

Martens' 19 points came on 9-of-13 shooting from the free-throw line. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Junior Jenna Mooberry had a game and career-high 12 boards, including five on the offensive glass. Turpel finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. Lewis held a 41-40 rebounding edge but Quincy had a 19-5 advantage in assists. Quincy's Whitnae Irby had seven assists and Jessica Kellyer had six. Each was one of five Lady Hawks to score in double-digits. Quincy improved to 14-7 (9-4 GLVC) while the Flyers fell to 10-10 (6-7 GLVC).

Lewis has a key game Tuesday when the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers come to Neil Carey Arena at 7 p.m.
