ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Lewis split a doubleheader with Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Sunday at Brennan Field. Lewis won the first game 6-5 with two runs in the bottom of seventh and fell 5-2 in the nightcap
The Flyers' rally in the seventh started with senior Brian Clancy reached on an error. He then scored from third on a passed ball with one out to tie it up. Then with runners on second and third and two outs the Cougars elected to intentionally walk senior Mike Smith for the second time in the game to get to senior Bryan Druktenis. Also for the second time, the move benefited the Flyers, as Druktenis was hit in his back with a pitch to end the game and give him his second RBI of the game.
The Flyers got on the board first by scoring three runs in the second inning. Sophomore Ryan McManaman doubled over the right fielder's head to score Druktenis and put junior Chris McCall on third. The Flyers scored their final two runs of the inning on RBI groundouts by Clancy and junior Chris Brigham.
After SIUE scored one in the top of the third the Flyers added one in the bottom half of the inning.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth senior Tim Harmatys got into some trouble in the sixth with the first four batters getting on base. Senior Jon Crettol entered the game (2-0) and initially held the Cougars back till Ben Bartley delivered a two-out two RBI single to give the Cougars a 5-4 lead. With the bases loaded Crettol stuck out Josh Street to end the inning and keep the deficit to a manageable one run to set up the dramatic bottom of the seventh.
Druktenis finished with a team-high three hits. McManaman, Clancy and Bingham each had an RBI in the game one victory. Andrew Beatty (0-2) took the loss for the Cougars.
The Flyers got on the board first again in game two. McCall singled to lead off the second inning and scored on a two-out RBI single by senior Ryan Duran. Duran was thrown out at home after sophomore Fedoruk reached on an error by the SIUE second baseman.
Senior Adam Stabosz pitched swell, not allowing a hit till two outs in the fifth inning. But in the sixth inning the Cougars loaded the bases with no outs. Street hit into a fielders choice to score a run, but Stabosz notched two strikeouts to get out of the jam allowing only one run.
SIUE loaded the bases again in the seventh, this time with one out. But Stabosz again rallied to allowed only one run. SIUE extended their lead to 5-1 with three runs in the top of the ninth. The Flyers put a rally together in the bottom of the ninth, scoring a run and loading the bases with senior Billy Duffy at the plate. But Duffy struck out swinging to end the game. David Scott (2-0) got the win for the Cougars while Stabosz fell to 0-2.
The Flyers are 5-6 (2-2 GLVC) while the Cougars are now 8-7 (2-2 GLVC).
