ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Junior Lisa Gartland homered twice and was one of four Flyers to go deep as Lewis swept St. Francis 5-0 and 7-4, Wednesday afternoon in the Flyers' first two home games of the season.
Gartland's first home run was the Flyers' first run in game one. Leading off in the third, she drove a first-pitch fastball deep over the fence just left of center.
Lewis added three more in the fourth and one more in the sixth. In the fourth, freshman Stephanie Harmon hit a two-run blast to center, scoring junior Kelly Dianis who walked to start the inning. Gartland later singled with two out and advanced to second on an error, and then junior Jessica Beck scored her with a single through the left side.
Harmon, who went 3-for-3 in the game, hit home Lewis' fifth run in the fifth by ripping a RBI single into right field.
Junior Courtney Lyons (9-3) went the distance for a complete-game shutout the circle. She struck out 11 while allowing just three hits, lowering her ERA to 0.84 for the season. Jacie Spudic (3-2) took the loss for the Saints.
Lewis jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the Saints in game two, scoring a run in both the first and second innings. Sophomore Kara Harmatys led off the Flyers' first with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Sarah Hurley. Senior Carla Musillo brought Harmatys home with a sacrifice fly to left.
Sophomore Brittany DiPietro made it 2-0 Lewis in the second when she belted her first collegiate home run.
St. Francis evened the score in the third and then took a one-run lead in the fourth, but Lewis responded with two in the fifth and three in the sixth.
In the fifth, Musillo registered her second RBI of the game with a single to score Harmatys. Dianis followed with a double to left to score Musillo.
The Flyers went back-to-back in the sixth to put the game away. Gartland nailed her second long ball of the day, a two-run shot, and Harmatys followed with drive to left.
Harmatys finished the game 3-for-4, coming up a triple short of the cycle. Senior Ashley LeGrand, who scored on Gartland's home run, was 2-for-3 with a double in the game.
Freshman Kim Malacina (4-2) suffered the loss in game two, but she did have two doubles at the plate. Sophomore Beth Boezeman also doubled in game two, collecting two RBI.
Freshman Diana Pickrum (2-0) picked up the win after pitching the final 3 1/3 innings. She gave up just one hit and did not allow an earned run.
The Flyers (14-8) have won five straight games. Since starting the season 1-6, Lewis has gone 14-2. Lewis scheduled to host Bellarmine on Friday at Noon.
