Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Sophomore Kara Harmatys smacked two game-winning doubles and a run-scoring single to help lift the No. 9 Flyers to a 3-2 and 5-3 doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin-Parkside, Wednesday afternoon at the Lewis softball field.
Harmatys' first double was a walk-off shot to left center. She came up with one on and two out in the bottom of the seventh of a 2-2 game and drove the first pitch she saw deep into the gap to end the game.
Game two was 3-3 in the fourth when Harmatys hit a carbon copy of her first double to score senior Ashley LeGrand with the go-ahead run. LeGrand drew a lead-off walk to start the inning. Harmatys' RBI single was the Flyers' first run in game one.
Down 2-1 in the first game, Lewis tied the score when junior Lisa Gartland knocked in junior Carissa Castonzo from third with a fielder's choice. Castonzo has singled ahead of Gartland and advanced to second and third on consecutive wild pitches.
Junior Courtney Lyons (16-4) earned the game-one win with a four-hit complete game. She struck out seven while walking just one batter.
The Flyers took advantage of two first-inning errors in game two with a RBI single by junior Kelly Dianis and a successful squeeze bunt by Castonzo to take a quick 2-0 lead.
Lewis made it 3-0 in the second when senior Mallory Paine doubled in freshman Sarah Hurley who had singled and stole second earlier in the frame.
The Rangers battled back with a three-run fourth to tie the game, chasing Lewis starter Diana Pickrum. Junior Julie Wingerter (4-2) came on in relief and worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
The Flyers added an insurance run in the fifth when Gartland ripped one up the middle to score Dianis from second.
Wisconsin-Parkside threatened one more time in the sixth. With one out, the Rangers drew back-to-back walks. Lyons entered the game in relief of Wingerter and hit the first batter she faced to load the bases, but she got the next hitter to ground into a 1-2-3 double play to end the threat.
After allowing a lead-off single in the seventh, Lyons retired the next three to pick up her second save of the season.
Lewis (30-10, 15-1) has won seven straight games and 11 of their last 12. The Flyers travel to face Indianapolis on Saturday.
