Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -
Junior Kelly Dianis belted two homers and collected four RBIs, and senior Carla Musillo hit a home run, two doubles and totaled five RBIs as the No. 9 Flyers swept a conference doubleheader against Indianapolis 12-3 (5 innings) and 5-3, Saturday afternoon.
The Flyers (32-10, 17-1) increased their win streak to nine games and maintained a four-game lead for first in the conference standings with six Great Lakes Valley Conference games remaining.
During the team's current win streak, the Flyers have averaged 7.2 runs per game while allowing just 1.7. Lewis' run-rule win over the Greyhounds in game one was the Flyers' fifth run-rule victory in the last eight games.
The Flyers led Indy 11-0 after just two innings of play. Lewis scored three runs in the first thanks to Musillo's three-run home run. Scoring on the long ball was sophomore Kara Harmatys, who led off with a double, and senior Mallory Paine, who reached on an error.
The floodgates opened in the second as eight Flyers crossed home plate.
Harmatys notched an RBI single for the first run. Musillo doubled in two runners, and then Dianis brought her home when she ripped the 20th homer of her career. Junior Lisa Gartland doubled in junior Carissa Castonzo, and then freshman Stephanie Harmon hit her fifth homer of the season to bring Gartland across. Castonzo gave Lewis its 12th run with a solo home run in the fourth.
Junior Courtney Lyons (17-4) struck out nine in a complete-game effort.
Game two saw the Flyers plate two first-inning runs when Dianis made Indy pay for a walk to Musillo by homering over the fence in left center. Dianis moved to within one of the Lewis career home run record with the blast.
Lewis added to its lead with a three-run sixth. Gartland's two-run bomb to left center capped the rally. It was the seventh homer of the season for Gartland. She is tied with Paine for the team lead and is two away from joining Paine and Dianis as the only players in program history with 20 or more career home runs.
The Flyers' three-run sixth proved necessary when Indy rallied for three runs of their own in the bottom half. Junior Julie Wingerter stopped the rally with a superb relief effort. She got Lewis out of the sixth and then pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for her first save of the season. Freshman Diana Pickrum (8-0) picked up the win.
The Flyers play at Saint Joseph's on Sunday. If the Flyers come away with a sweep, they will clinch first place in the conference and the No. 1 seed for the upcoming conference championship tournament.
