RENSSElAER, Ind. - All-time Lewis University home run leader senior Mallory Paine added two more long balls to her career total as the No. 9 Flyers split a doubleheader at Saint Joseph's with a 2-0 win and a 2-1 (11) loss, Sunday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

The Flyers (33-11, 18-2) had won 10 straight prior to the extra-inning loss in game two. It was the second 10-game win streak of the season for the Flyers. Lewis also won 10 straight from March 6-29.

In game one at Saint Joseph's, the Flyers scored one time in each the first and third innings. Junior Kelly Dianis brought home Lewis' first run with a one-out grounder to the right side. In the third, Paine connected for career home run No. 23, a solo shot to left.

Junior Courtney Lyons (18-4) did the rest for Lewis, pitching her 17th complete game and seventh shutout of the season. She allowed only three hits and one walk while striking out eight batters.

Lewis scored first in game two when Paine launched her team-leading ninth homer of the season with one out in the first inning. The Flyers maintained their 1-0 lead until the fourth when the Pumas evened the score with an RBI single.

The game remained knotted 1-1 until the 11th when the Pumas opened their half with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, and then a single through the left side brought home the game-winning run.

After Paine's first-inning home run, Lewis' offense was limited to just four more hits. Saint Joseph's Sara Somogyi pitched all 11 innings and struck out 13 batters.

The Flyers only had one runner reach third after the first inning. Junior Lisa Gartland led off the Flyers' 10th with a bunt-single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then stole third, but she was stranded there.

The Flyers return to action on Tuesday when they host Saint Xavier in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
