ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Juniors Carissa Castonzo and Lisa Gartland each tallied two RBIs as the No. 9 Flyers defeated Saint Xavier 5-1 in game one of a non-conference doubleheader, Tuesday afternoon at the Lewis softball field. The Cougars nearly choked up a seven-run lead before holding on for a 10-8 win in game two.

In game one, the Flyers (34-12) scored three in the first and one more in each the third and sixth innings.

Singles by sophomore Kara Harmatys, senior Carla Musillo and junior Kelly Dianis loaded the base for Castonzo who hit a sacrifice fly to center for Lewis' first run. Gartland later singled up the middle to plate two more runs.

Senior Ashley LeGrand notched a RBI single in the third, and Castonzo drew a walk with the bases loaded in the sixth.

Junior Julie Wingerter (5-2) allowed just four hits while striking out eight for the complete-game win. Her eight strike outs matched her season high.

The Cougars led Lewis 2-1 in game two before tallying six runs in the fifth. Amanda Rimkus provided the big blow with a grand slam to left field. Solo homers by Aly Kelly and Rebeka Ruettiger in the sixth and seventh helped the Cougars extend their lead, and proved necessary for the win.

Down 8-1, the Flyers attempted a big-time comeback, but fell just short.

Dianis ripped her sixth home run of the season in the fifth for two runs. In the sixth, freshman Jessica Jennings and sophomore Lexie Vernon each singled to start the inning. Harmatys later brought home Vernon with a single up the middle.

The seventh saw Lewis score four times and get the winning run to first before going down. The Flyers started the inning with three straight hits, getting a single from Dianis, a double by freshman Stephanie Harmon and a run-scoring single by Gartland. Jennings reached next on a botched fielder's choice, collecting her first collegiate RBI.

A double by Harmatys scored two more Lewis runs. With runners on second and third, freshman Sarah Hurley drew a walk to bring up Dianis with the bases loaded and two out. Dianis ripped a liner toward the gap in left, but the Cougars' left fielder made a running grab to end the game.

The Flyers resume action on Saturday, hosting Rockhurst at noon.
