ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Senior Billy Duffy went 5-for-7 on Senior Day but the Flyers fell 9-1 and 18-3 on Sunday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.
Duffy scored the Flyers' only run in game one in the third inning. He singled with one out and proceeded to steal second. Then junior Tim Bingham recorded an RBI by driving Duffy home on a single to left field. It was the first of two hits by Bingham in the opening game.
It was all the Flyers could muster against Greyhounds' hurler Andrew Werner. The contest was tied 1-1 entering the top of the fifth when Indianapolis put three runs on the board. Indianapolis added four in the sixth and then one in the seventh to take the game. Senior Ryan Duran (0-5) took the loss for the Flyers, going all seven innings.
Senior John Benisek started at designated hitter and recorded a single. He also had a pinch hit single in game two.
Lewis collected nine hits in game two and scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning to make it a one run game at the time. The Flyers loaded the bases in the inning when senior Bryan Druktenis was hit by a pitch and both juniors Chris McCall and Ryan Reynolds worked walks. A wild pitch scored Druktenis. Freshman Richard Forkin grounded out to knock in McCall. Another wild pitch scored Reynolds.
Indianapolis made it 10-3 with two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth. They expanded their lead with eight runs in the top of the eighth. Duffy and senior Mike Smith each had two hits in game two. Senior Adam Stabosz (3-6) took the loss, allowing six earned runs in six innings.
Indianapolis is now 33-17 (17-11 GLVC) while the Flyers are 16-26 (10-18). The Flyers play their final home game of the season on Wednesday when St. Francis comes to Brennan Field. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
