Despite a .424 hitting percentage and 16 kills by junior Drew Pickering, No. 15 Lewis fell to IPFW 3-1 (30-27, 30-24, 27-30, 30-22) Saturday evening in a road Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match.
After an early 7-4 deficit in game one, the Flyers rallied to take an 11-9 advantage. The Flyers took a 27-24 lead with an ace by senior Jared Dayton. But the Mastodons would score the next six points and take game one.
A four point run in game two turned a one-point game into a 26-21 Mastodon advantage. IPFW would take a 2-0 lead by winning the game by six points.
The Flyers came back to win the third game, controlling most of the way till IPFW got within one at 27-26. But a service error by IPFW and kills by Dayton and junior David Kelnhofer gave the game to the Flyers.
Lewis took a 6-2 advantage in game four, but six straight points by IPFW gave the Mastodons an 8-6 lead. The Mastodons led the rest of the way.
Senior Jared Dayton notched 15 kills, his tenth straight match of double-digit kills. Junior Nick Perakes had 13 digs. Sophomore Mike Iandolo finished with 43 assists, ten digs and three assists. Junior Billy Sahagian added seven kills. Kelnhofer and junior Alex Vigansky each had six kills.
For IPFW, Jason Yhost notched 20 kills. The Mastodons improve to 12-11 (5-6 MIVA). Lewis falls to 19-8 (6-4 MIVA). The Flyers host MIVA rival Loyola-Chicago on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
