Flyers Topple Ramblers

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Junior Drew Pickering (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa West)'s double-double powered the No. 15 Flyers over the Loyola University Ramblers 3-1 (30-26, 30-24, 23-30, 30-22) on Tuesday evening at Neil Carey Arena in a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match.

Pickering hit .444 with 15 kills and 10 digs. He also recorded three blocks (one solo). Freshman Brian Muesenfechter also pounded home 15 kills. Senior Jared Dayton recorded his 12th straight match of double-digit kills, notching 15 kills, eight digs and four blocks (one solo). Seven of Dayton's kills came in the fourth game. The Flyers dominated game four, out-hitting the Ramblers .486 to .188. An 8-1 run turned a 7-4 Ramblers lead into a 12-8 Lewis advantage.

Game one was tied nine times and the teams exchanged leads on three occasions. But at game point junior Tom Garvey was inserted into the lineup and recorded an ace for the 30th point. In game two, Lewis held the Ramblers to a -.094 hitting percentage.

The Flyers held a dominating 13.0 to 4.0 edge in blocks. Senior David Kyner came off the bench to record four blocks (one solo).

The Ramblers fall to 15-12 (7-5 MIVA) while Flyers improve to 20-8 (7-4 MIVA). The victory gives head coach Dan Friend his first 20 win season as the Flyers' head man. The victory also clinches third place in the MIVA and a home match in the first round.

Lewis finishes the regular season with a match against MIVA leading No. 8 Ball State on Saturday at 7 p.m. Seniors Dayton and Kyner will be honored as part of senior night.
