Senior Mike Smith had four hits, including a home run, but the Flyers fell to Bellarmine 22-10 and 8-5 on Saturday afternoon in a road Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.
In game two, Lewis jumped out to a 5-0 advantage with three runs in the third and two in the fourth. Junior Chris Brigham knocked in two in the third with a double. Brigham then scored on a single by senior Bryan Druktenis.
In the fourth freshman Ryan Koerner knocked home junior Ryan Reynolds who led the inning off with a single. Koerner then scored on a fielder's choice by Smith. But the Flyers couldn't hold the lead. Bellarmine scored four in both the fifth and sixth to take the game.
Senior Tim Harmatys (2-3) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs in 5.2 innings.
In game one, Smith had a two-run home run in the first to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead after one. The Knights then scored three in the second. Lewis took the lead back with three of their own in the top of the third. But the Knights put three on the board again in the bottom of the inning. Lewis tied it with two in the top of the fourth before Bellarmine scored five in the bottom half. Lewis scored one in each the fifth and sixth to cut the lead to 13-10. But a nine spot by Bellarmine in the bottom of the eighth put the game away.
Smith was 3-for-6 in the second game, with four RBI and three runs scored. Senior Billy Duffy had two RBI and two runs scored. For the doubleheader, leadoff man freshman Mike Vucsko was 6-of-8, scoring three runs, knocking in one and walking once. Senior Jon Guzzo took the loss (4-3), allowing seven earned runs in four innings.
Bellarmine improves to 32-17 (22-6) while the Flyers fall to 17-28 (10-20). Lewis and Bellarmine play another doubleheader tomorrow, starting at noon Central.
