Junior Stephanie Sagat had a match-high 16 kills in No. 24 Lewis' 3-1 (25-15, 14-25, 25-18, 25-20) conference victory over Bellarmine on Friday night.
After the two squads traded runway victories in the first two sets, set three was tighter. Lewis started to pull away with the score tied at nine. Four straight points, including two kills by Sagat, pushed Lewis ahead. The Knights got within three again at 16-13, but couldn't get much closer. Kills by sophomore Kim Richards and Sagat for the 24th and 25th points sealed the victory.
Set four started out looking like set two, with Bellarmine jumping out to a lead at 13-9. A Richards kill, a Sagat kill and a Richards' ace made Bellarmine call a timeout with the score at 13-12. Out of the break, Sagat came right back with a kill to tie it up. It was back-and-forth down the stretch till a Richards' kill tied it at 20. A block by freshman Katie Crawford and junior Sara deBuhr gave the Flyers a one-point advantage. Sagat then pounded home two kills and deBuhr added the next two to finish off the Knights.
Richards finished with 10 kills, six digs and two aces. Sophomore Rachel Ruedi had four kills, 29 assists and four digs. In a reserve role, Crawford finished with nine assists and two digs. Senior Justina Begemann added eight digs, five kills and two aces. Senior Lauren Hatter had 14 digs.
Lewis hit .254 while holding the Knights to a minuscule .082 mark. Emily Beckman led Bellarmine with 10 kills.
The Flyers improve to 7-3 (2-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference) while Bellarmine falls to 1-5 (1-1 GLVC). Lewis hosts Northern Kentucky on Saturday at 3 p.m.
