ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Two second half goals pushed the Flyers to a 2-0 conference victory over Bellarmine on a rainy Friday afternoon.
Lewis controlled the scoreless first half, holding a 5-1 edge in shots and 3-1 advantage in shots on goal. Their momentum finally paid off just over 10 minutes into the second half when junior Jessica McNamara took a long cross and moved in from the left side. Her shot attempt was blocked, but junior Amy Foran picked up the deflection and pounded it home for her first goal of the season.
It stayed that way till the 85:15 mark when sophomore Jessica Summers-Hernandez scored from 10 yards in front of the net. Foran and sophomore Colleen Kelly picked up assists on the goal after they pushed the ball down the middle of the field to the open Summers-Hernandez. The score was Summers-Hernandez's second of the season.
Goaltender sophomore Megan George earned the shutout with a solid performance in the net. She finished with four saves, including three in the second half. She also consistently attacked Bellarmine's crosses to stifle the Knights offense.
The contest was the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both schools. The win improves the Flyers to 3-1 (1-0 GLVC) while Bellarmine earns their first loss and falls to 4-1 (0-1 GLVC).
