Sept. 24, 2008

Box Score

JOLIET, Ill. - Junior Stephanie Sagat (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South)'s 15 kills led the No. 21 Lewis Flyers to a 25-20, 25-20, 25-21 sweep of St. Francis on Wednesday evening.

The Flyers took set one easily, but the second was a bit tighter. With the score tied at 15, kills by juniors Sara deBuhr and Kim Richards and an ace by freshman Katie Crawford gave the Flyers some breathing room. Lewis made it 23-19 on a kill by deBuhr. It was set up by a solid serve by sophomore Rachel Ruedi that resulted in a free ball for deBuhr to pound home.

The Flyers made the score 15-11 in set three on a kill by freshman Colleen Mitros. St. Francis rallied to make it close at 17-15. After trading points the Flyers scored four straight to make it 22-17. The run was highlighted by two Sagat kills. It was all Lewis the rest of the way for the three set victory.

"The team adjusted well to a defense they hadn't played against before," head coach Lorelee Smith said after her squad's eighth sweep of the year.

Sagat was two digs short of a double-double with eight. Richards finished with seven kills. deBuhr and sophomore Danielle Mount each had five kills and no errors. Mount also recorded three assisted blocks. Sophomore Lauren Seliga finished with a team-high 14 digs. Ruedi had 32 assists, five digs, two block assists and two aces. Off the bench, Crawford delivered two aces. She was one of several reserves to see time on the court.

"We're confident when we sub in," Smith said of her backups. "We don't worry when we use our bench."

The Flyers are now 12-3, and have an 11 match win streak. St. Francis falls to 10-8. Lewis returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Friday when the Flyers host Drury at 7 p.m.
