Romeoville, Ill. - For thirty minutes, both the Lewis Men’s Soccer team and Truman State felt each other out to see who would blink first.

Unfortunately for Truman State, it was the Bulldogs who blinked as Lewis tallied a pair of goals within 47 seconds of each other in the opening half on their way to the 2-0 non-conference victory at Lewis University Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore midfielder Jose Ibarra (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) got the ball rolling for the Flyers, as he took a cross pass from junior Kipp Cartwright (Park Forest, Ill./Marian Catholic) and found the back of the net, putting Lewis ahead, 1-0 at the 31:49 mark of the opening period.

Less than a minute later, senior midfielder Cory Mastey (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) kept the ball rolling for Lewis as he avoided a tackle and blasted a shot past Truman State goalkeeper Kyle Talbot, for his fifth goal of the season and the final score of 2-0.

With the victory, Lewis improves to 7-1 on the campaign, while the Bulldogs fall to 3-5 overall.

Lewis head men’s soccer coach Evan Fiffles credits a change in the Flyers’ offense to the scoring explosion in the first half.

“We put Cory (Mastey) up top,” Fiffles said. “I thought in the first half we had some space that we could expose some of our speed so we put Cory there and I think it opened up some things.”

Lewis senior goalkeeper Anthony Szymel (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) made six saves on the afternoon to earn his fifth shutout of the season.

“That’s a good team,” Fiffles said of Truman State. “All of their losses are against very good opponents and tough competition. They play a certain style and they are very good at it, but you have to play your style and you can’t get affected.”

Lewis is back in action on Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 1) as they travel to Fayette, Iowa to square off with Upper Iowa at 3 p.m. (CST).
