ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Freshman Jordyn McMahon (Rockford, Ill./Boylan)'s first collegiate goal helped lift the Flyers to a 2-1 victory over Ferris State on Sunday afternoon.
With McMahon waiting infront of the goal, senior Amy Foran delivered a perfect cross from the far right side. All McMahon had to do was knock it in, and she didn't miss. The goal came at 71:41 and gave the Flyers the lead. Strong Lewis defense didn't allow a Ferris State shot the rest of the way.
Junior Courtney Kettel got the Flyers on the board first. After a scoreless first half, Kettel scored just seven minutes into the second. With defenders surrounding her, she blasted a shot from 22 yards out. Ferris State goalkeeper Becci Houdek made the initial save but the ball bounded up and hit the crossbar. It came down just to the left of the keeper and bounced back towards the goal. Houdek extended her left hand and batted it away, but not before it just barely entered the net for the first score of the game.
The lead wouldn't last long though. Six minutes later Maegan Smith scored for Ferris State to tie it up. But her goal only set up McMahon's eventual game winning score.
The Flyers held a 9-6 edge in shots and 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Lewis is now 2-1 while Ferris State is 1-2. Lewis opens conference play on Friday against Bellarmine.
