No. 11 Men's Volleyball Wins Opener Over California Baptist 3-1

PROVO, Utah. - The No. 11 Lewis University men's volleyball team started the 2009 season in style with a 3-1 (30-28, 30-28, 21-30, 30-26) victory over California Baptist on Friday afternoon.

The Flyers controlled the net, recording 13 solo blocks and five block assists for an average of 4.5 blocks per set.

"The team did a great job blocking as a group," head coach Dan Friend said. Friend improves to 3-2 in season openers as the Lewis head coach.

Senior Alex Vigansky (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) had three solo blocks and two assisted blocks. He also had 13 kills with only one error to notch a .610 hitting percentage.

"Alex was great offensively," Friend said. "He dominated at the net for us, especially on side out situations."

Junior Craig Boller (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) hit .380 with seven kills and added five blocks. Senior Drew Pickering (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa West) recorded four solos and an assist. Offensively Pickering added 11 kills.

Junior Nathan Klaas (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) led with 14 kills and a team-high seven digs in his first match as the starting outside hitter.

"Nathan was solid," Friend said. "He proved he worked hard in the offseason and I'm excited to see his progress."

The Flyers improve to 1-0. California Baptist, who defeated No. 10 Brigham Young in five sets on Thursday, falls to 2-3.
