KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Four Flyers scored in double-figures but the Rockhurst Hawks shot 60 percent from the floor to top Lewis 90-77 on Friday evening in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.
It was a run and gun game from the start, with both teams knotted at 20 through the first ten minutes. But that's when the contest shifted. Over the final ten minutes of the first half the Hawks outscored Lewis 28-13 to take a 15 point advantage into the break.
Rockhurst continued to find success from the floor in the final half, taking a 26-point lead with 9:20 remaining. But the Flyers would rally back, cutting the lead to eight with 2:18 left on a trey and two free throws by sophomore Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton). Sophomore Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) had 11 points in the surge to shave 18 points off the Hawks' lead. But it would be too little too late for the Flyers as the Hawks made their free throws down the stretch to take the contest.
Freshman Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) scored 27 points, draining 10-of-14 from the field, and had six boards and three steals. Turpel had a phenomenal contest, honing in on a triple or even a quadruple-double, registering 21 points, 11 boards, seven assists and seven steals. Both Carbaugh and Turpel went 7-for-11 from the charity stripe.
Currin added 11 points with four steals while sophomore Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) drained four from long range to score 12.
Lewis forced more turnovers (26-20) and got to the line 10 more times (26-16). The Flyers led in rebounds (36-31), including grabbing 21 offensive boards to the Hawks' eight. But in the end the Hawks shot the ball too well to give the Flyers a chance to get back in it.
Lewis falls back to .500 at 6-6 (2-1 GLVC). Rockhurst gets their fifth straight victory and improves to 7-6 (1-2 GLVC). Julie Cook led the Hawks with 18 points.
The Flyers return to action on Sunday at Drury. Start time is 3:15 p.m.
