ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Junior Nathan Klaas (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had a career-high 19 kills and nine digs to lead No. 12 Lewis to a 3-2 (30-20, 24-30, 30-24, 23-30, 15-7) non-conference victory over Lindenwood on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena.
The Flyers out-hit the Lions .478 to .059 in the opening set to take a 1-0 lead. The two teams traded set victories from there. The match featured only one lead change, early in set three, as the winner of each set pulled away early.
The Lions had all the momentum entering the final set but it was all put to a halt by senior Drew Pickering (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa West). His hot serving helped the Flyers score the first six points to take a stranglehold of set five. Lewis out-hit Lindenwood .385 to -.059 in the final set.
Pickering had 11 kills and five blocks (two solo). Senior David Kelnhofer (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) finished with 17 kills and eight digs. Senior Alex Vigansky (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) added 10 kills and five block assists. Junior Mike Iandolo (Orlando, Fla./Long Beach State) finished with 59 assists, three short of his career best. Senior Nick Perakes (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek) had 12 digs.
The Lions' Devin Shiroma had 24 kills. The Flyers out-blocked the Lions 13-9, but Lindenwood held a 57-49 digs edge, with four Lions finishing in double-digits.
Lindenwood falls to 0-1, the Flyers improve to 3-1. Lewis is off till next Friday when the Flyers open conference play at IPFW.
