INDIANAPOLIS - Lewis outscored No. 22 Indianapolis 42-28 in the second half to beat the Greyhounds 72-59 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest on Saturday evening. Sophomore Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed six boards.
"Jenny dealt with double and triple teams all night and still got big numbers," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "But it was a great team win. The bench came in and did exactly what I asked of them. I thought everyone played well."
The Flyers started hot, controlling most of the first half. Lewis grabbed a seven-point lead with 12:11 left on a layup by Turpel. But the lead wouldn't last as Indianapolis knotted it at 23 with 5:14 remaining and took a 31-30 advantage into the break.
Turpel converted a layup to open the scoring in the second and gave Lewis a one-point advantage. From there on the Flyers would never trail, starting the second on a 19-9 run. Lewis took a nine-point advantage with 11:31 remaining when Turpel finished in the paint on a feed by sophomore Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton). The Flyers led 58-50 at the five-minute timeout and put the hammer down from there. Freshman Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) hit two free throws and a jumper to open up a 12-point advantage. Lewis made all 10 free throws during the final five minutes of play.
The Flyers attempted a season low 13 treys, making three. Lewis shot 25-of-48 (52.1 percent) from the floor while limiting the Greyhounds to 22-of-54 (40.7 percent) shooting. Indianapolis entered the contest averaging 75.1 points per game. The Greyhounds, who have attempted the second most free throws in the conference, were 11-of-14 from the line.
"It was as physical as a game as we've played all year," Carlsen said. "When shots weren't falling for them they tried to take it to the basket and we held our ground."
Sophomore Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) had 15 points. Currin finished with 12 points, six assists and only one turnover. Carbaugh recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.
"Devon was very active and very efficient," Carlsen said.
The Greyhounds fall to 17-5 (6-4 GLVC). Lewis improves to 9-9 (5-4 GLVC). The Flyers return home on Thursday to face defending national champion Northern Kentucky at 5:30 p.m.
