Romeoville, Ill. - Lewis University senior forward Jason Genova (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick/Saint Xavier) had never gone three straight games in a Flyer uniform without knocking down at least one three-pointer.
Genova broke out of his recent shooting slump in fine fashion on Thursday night, as the Chicago, Illinois native knocked down a season-high five three-pointers and finished with a game and season-high 21 points to lift the host Flyers to the 73-50 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Missouri S&T at Neil Carey Arena on Thursday night.
Genova, Lewis' all-time leader in three-pointers made, now has 199 career trifectas. For the game, Lewis converted 10 three-pointers, tying a season-high, previously set against St. Francis (IL) on November 29th.
"It's good to see Jason back because he's been struggling lately," Lewis University head men's basketball coach Scott Trost said. "It's good to see him knock down some shots and that should help his confidence. We all know what type of player he is."
With the victory, Lewis improves to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in GLVC play, while the Miners drop to 5-7 on the campaign and 0-4 in conference action.
Lewis sophomore forward Lonnie Lawrence (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington) posted 10 points and four rebounds in the victory.
Lewis may have enjoyed success from beyond the arc, but they also proved quite feisty on the defensive end as they held Missouri S&T to 38.8% (19-for-49) shooting and forced 17 turnovers, which led to 24 Flyer points.
"We wanted to try and simplify the game on both ends of the floor," Trost said. "We wanted to take as much thinking as we could out of it. We wanted to come out and pressure them, deny their entries and trap their ball screens. I thought that got our kids going a little bit."
Missouri S&T junior guard Justin Taylor led the Miners with 14 points, while teammate Marquis Jones added 12 points in the loss.
Lewis is back in action on Saturday afternoon, as they host Quincy for a 3 p.m. tip-off at Neil Carey Arena.
