Men's Soccer: Lewis 2, #22 UW-Parkside 0 in PDF Format
Romeoville, Ill. - For the second-straight weekend, a nationally-ranked opponent came to Romeoville, Illinois with the hopes of defeating the Lewis University men's soccer team and for the second-straight week their hopes were dashed.
Lewis, led by a pair of goals from senior forward Nestor Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West), claimed the 2-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over #22 UW-Parkside at the Lewis Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Flyers defeated then No. 11 Northern Kentucky, 1-0, at home on October 2nd. With the victory, Lewis extends its home unbeaten streak to 20 games and has now won eight of their last nine contests.
"To shutout a team that's ahead of us in the regional rankings at home is always a good result," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "Things are coming together and we're getting some of our guys healthy, so that's definitely going to help our depth."
Lewis was on the board quickly, as Hernandez collected a rebound off of a Kipp Cartwright (Park Forest, Ill./Marian Catholic) shot and scored, just 2:05 into the contest.
Hernandez would find the back of the net again in the 41st minute, as he broke away from the pack, faked out a Ranger defender and scored on UW-Parkside keeper Jamie Lieberman.
Hernandez has now scored in six of his last seven contests and owns a team-best, 10 goals for the season.
With the win, Lewis improves to 9-3-1 overall and 8-3 in GLVC action, while the Rangers fall to 10-3-2 on the campaign and 5-3-2 in conference play.
Lewis freshman goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) made five saves in between the pipes for his seventh shutout of the season.
Lewis will have another opportunity against a ranked opponent on Wednesday (Oct. 14) afternoon, as the Flyers head to Kirksville, Missouri to square off with #9 Truman State for a 2 p.m. start.
A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 10th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
