Springfield, Ill. - Four different players scored in the second-half, as the Lewis University men's soccer team extended its winning streak to six games with the 4-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference road victory over Illinois-Springfield at Kiwanis Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Despite a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles knew that the Flyers would succeed with some perseverance.
"We created enough opportunities in the first half, but we just didn't find the back of the net," Fiffles said. "Once we got the first score, it gave us more confidence and when we scored a second time, you could see the wind come out of (UIS') sails."
With the victory, Lewis improves to 11-3-1 overall and 9-3 in conference play, while the host Prairie Stars drop to 1-13-1 on the campaign and 0-12-1 in GLVC action. The Flyers have now won 10 of their last 11 contests.
Lewis enjoyed a solid shots advantage, as the Flyers uncorked 28 shots, 16 of which were on goal, while UIS notched just four shots on the afternoon.
Lewis senior midfielder Kipp Cartwright (Park Forest, Ill./Marian Catholic) put the Flyers on the board in the 52nd minute, as freshman Robert McGowan (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) assisted on the play.
Senior forward Charlie Bucio (Chicago, Ill./Juarez) scored in his second-straight game with a tally at the 66:54 mark. Sophomore Nathan Groesch (Decatur, Ill./MacArthur/Bradley) assisted on the play.
A few short minutes later, junior midfielder Mardoche Beya (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) posted his second goal of the season to extend the Flyers' lead to 3-0 at the 69:37 mark. Bucio and senior forward Nestor Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) assisted on the play.
Hernandez would wrap up the scoring for the Flyers, as he tied his career-high in goals scored with his 11th tally of the season at the 74:45 mark.
Lewis returns to action on Friday (Oct. 23), as the Flyers host Quincy for a 2:30 p.m. start at Lewis Soccer Field.
